Olive wood carving is an ancient heritage that dates back to as early as the 4th century with the start of Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Olive trees are one of the mainstays of the Palestinian economy. The wood carvers pass down their talents to their children for generations. It is a skilled trade that requires 6-7 years of training for one to become a professional craftsperson. All the olive wood figurines and arts are hand-carved from the trimmings (pruning) of the Bethlehem olive trees. The grain of the wood gives each piece a special, unique character.
